Molybdenum Lanthanum Oxide

Molybdenum Lanthanum Oxide (ML) is produced by combining small amounts of Lanthanum Oxide particles (approximately 0.3 – 0.7%) with Molybdenum. This creates a special stacked fiber microstructure that is stable at temperatures up to 2000°C.ML has an increased recrystallization temperature to 1300°C (90% def).


After recrystallization the elongated grain structure with jagged grain boundaries provides a measurable increase in ductility and creep resistant strength over that seen with pure Molybdenum.


Molybdenum Lanthanum Oxide is the preferred material when embrittlement after recrystallization must be avoided.  This alloy maintains its dimensional shape stability at high-temperatures.


With additional forming and heat treatment process, the properties of ML are further enhanced to meet the demands of various application requirements.  Thinner gauges of sheet less than 1 mm are normally supplied in the Stress Relieved conditions (MLS).  This is accomplished with a high degree of deformation in the products – light gauge.  Most applications requiring such ductility generally require the thinner gauges of sheet material.


Prime examples of applications where MLS sheet material is used are vacuum furnace heating elements and support structures, heat shields, gas nozzles and various other furnace hot zone components.


Thicker gauges 1mm and greater where improved creep strength is required and where ductility is not the major concern are supplied in the Recrystallized condition (MLR).  These products would typically carry loads, such as furnace rails, sintering boats, annealing boats, trays, grids and racks, etc.
